 The Rise of Lothlorien

Lothlorien is a historic structure built in 1915 --one of the first 2 buildings on our stretch of Lake Mendota. In its 90+ year history, Loth has been a fraternity,a women's dormitory, an army barracks, & now our dear Loth co-op.

Since our founding in 1973, Lothlorien Co-op has striven to provide a welcoming & supportive atmosphere for people of all ages, sexes, races and sexual orientations. Many of our housemembers are politically active in queer rights, labor rights, environmental & feminist movements, & our home is an open resource to activist groups like: Food Not Bombs, Stop the War, Radical Cheerleaders, & the Madison Art Collective. We often host benefit concerts, fiestas, coffeehouses, & other events providing the city of Madison w/ good times. Based in egalitarian ideals, house decisions are made through modified consensus at weekly house meetings.

Lothlorien Co-op is a provider of low income, equal opportunity housing.  Each candidate for either food or residence membership is considered on the basis of their ability to adhere to Lothlorien's policies and guidelines at the time of their candidacy, and any applicable MCC (Madison Community Cooperative) regulations.
